Notes From All Over Part III
January 19, 2004Fresh Monday links to enjoy while sipping your morning java. On CSS Hacks, XHTML Validation errors, Haughey and Zeldman under the iron, logo trends, security holes, anything-but-IE, video ads, ad agencies vs. the web, 404’s, the Bloggies, and HTML rendering.
- CSS Hacks — Chris Nott of dithered semi-returns with what I’d call the ultimate list of CSS filters. Check this chart. Unreal.
- Common XHTML validation errors — Incomprehensible validation errors? Check this first.
- Matt Haughey Under the Iron — On Metafilter, taking on projects, and making money.
- Zeldman Under the Iron — Was paid content. Is now free. Go read. Insightful and interesting as always.
- Logo Trends 2003 — a little old now, but still fascinating.
- Firebird’s not home free, you know — Security problems increase proportionately with popularity.
- Developers Against Standards Deficient User Agents — not much content up yet. Looks to be an ‘anything but IE’ campaign. Echos of the ill-fated DASIE and Luxury Web concepts.
- Video ads with a twist — Fun. Annoying. Destined to make someone big money.
- Never let an ad agency design your web site. — Fair enough, but do you realize how much they get paid to not understand? If this is a problem, it isn’t going away. Perhaps it’s time to explore ways to help them get it, instead of decrying their misunderstanding. “The web is not about X”: if someone is making money off of X, then you’d better make a good fiscal case for Y. Looking forward to next week’s follow-up.
- The Perfect 404 — Ian Lloyd tells us what to do with the pages we want no one to see.
- Absolutely incredible chalk art — Now there is someone who paid attention during perspective drawing.
- 2004 Bloggie nominations. — Vote early, vote oft… oh, hey, wait. I’m in there? I demand a recount!
- The #1 reason that HTML pages render incorrectly in alternate browsers is because of differences in error handling and recovery.
